What Is Palmistry in the Vedic Tradition?
Hasta Samudrika Shastra is the Indian tradition of reading the hand. It belongs to the wider Samudrika Shastra, which interprets the marks and features of the body. A palmistry reading looks at the shape of the hand and fingers, the major lines and the raised areas of the palm known as mounts.
The Major Lines of the Palm
Life Line (Jeevan Rekha)
The Life Line curves around the base of the thumb. It is traditionally read for vitality, energy and major changes in life, and not as a measure of how long a person will live.
Heart Line (Hriday Rekha)
The Heart Line runs across the upper palm. It is read for emotional life and the way a person forms relationships.
Head Line (Mastishk Rekha)
The Head Line runs across the middle of the palm. It is read for thinking style, focus and approach to learning.
Fate Line (Bhagya Rekha)
The Fate Line rises vertically toward the middle finger. It is read for career path and life direction, and it is not present on every hand.
Sun Line (Surya Rekha)
The Sun Line rises toward the ring finger. It is read for creativity and recognition.
The Mounts of the Palm
The mounts are named after the planets. A fuller mount is traditionally read as a stronger expression of that planet.
- Jupiter, below the index finger, relates to ambition and leadership.
- Saturn, below the middle finger, relates to discipline and responsibility.
- Sun, below the ring finger, relates to creativity and recognition.
- Mercury, below the little finger, relates to communication and commerce.
- Venus, at the base of the thumb, relates to affection and vitality.
- Moon, on the outer lower palm, relates to imagination and intuition.
- Mars has two areas, one above the Life Line and one below the Mercury mount, and relates to courage and resilience.
